BIO & STEPS
Born:
In
1957 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Studies:
BA,
1985, University of New Orleans, USA
Themes and
style:
Contemplative,
evocative and mysterious, Gonzales' work uses a rigorous formal structure to
mine the processes of painting and perception. His process begins with digital
images culled from random searches on the internet. In addition to this, he
uses source photographs of places and people taken himself. Wayne often
revisits the images he has taken and zooms in and out of the whole composition
like a camera lens, cropping, moving and playing around so that the final work
has a whole different meaning.
Techniques:
His work
is developed in paintings, mostly acrylic and gouache.

In
his own words:
“I
knew when I was a child that I wanted to be an artist, but didn't know what
that meant. As a young adult, I left college twice and worked as a commercial
artist for a few years before going back to school to study fine art. When I
graduated in 1985, I was 28. Then I tried graduate school in New Orleans for a
year, but didn't feel challenged enough. In 1988 I moved to New York.”
