Themes and
style:
Döbeli
is an abstract painter who works primarily with ultra large canvas formats – a
practical and aesthetic challenge which he has convincingly mastered. Some of
his paintings initially assume a monochrome appearance, and yet while they are
never entirely uniform, they are constructed from several transparent layers of
colour. Emerging through the layers of colour are forms which, though seemingly
unplanned, indeed constitute an integral part of the painting process. Thus,
without firm contours, they retain a somewhat elusive character, thereby
challenging the viewer’s gaze. No reproduction is entirely capable of doing
full justice to this subtle experience, which results solely from the visible
elements of painting. Thus, Döbeli belongs to a Romantic history of painting to
which Barnett Newman and Palermo also belong.
Techniques:
His work
is developed in paintings, mostly watercolours.
