Studies:

From 1967-1970 he studied painting and architecture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes, Lisbon, where he also received his Master's degree in 1976.

Themes and style: 
         drian Schiess creates flat, abstract paintings with highly glossy surfaces. Constructed of aluminum panels layered with digital prints, his works are thickly lacquered and usually displayed on the ground, forcing viewers to move among them, to “become a gesture” and thus a part of the artist’s process.

He represented Switzerland at the 1990 Venice Biennale, participated in Documenta IX, Kassel, and more recently has exhibited work at the Renaissance Society, Chicago; Neues Museum, Nuremberg; Museu Serralves, Porto; ZKM, Karlsruhe; and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York.See all at:

In his own words:


"But I can also just sit on a chair and dream that colors are floating by, and then the same board is purple, blue and green. This is related to the way I associate the idea of inner spaces with colour. The relationship of color and space is much more important to me than, for instance, it´s connection with form or illustration. Obviously color and form are related but the meaning of form is secondary in this respect. Painting is always bound up with matter, and so, depending on your point of view, there´s something bleak about it. (...)"
