BIO & STEPS
Born:
In 1959 in Múzquiz, Coahuila. ( México)
He died in 2006 in Zacatecas, México.
Studies:
Galán
started painting while studying architecture at the University of Monterrey,
and later left the program to paint full-time. He began exhibiting his
paintings in Monterrey in 1980 at Galería Arte Actual Mexicano. In 1984, he
moved to New York and exhibited his works at Art Mart Gallery in Manhattan’s
East Village. Galán continued to exhibit throughout the United States, Europe,
and South America. By 1989, Gálan had become one of the most popular Mexican
painters in the art world. He was the only Mexican included in the Magiciens de
la Terre show at the Center Pompidou in Paris, and in 1995 was included in the
Museum of Modern Art’s Biennial. His last solo show, My Mirrors, was in 2001 at
Robert Miller Gallery in New York.
Themes and style:
Galán was part of the second generation of Mexican
neo-Expressionist artists during the late 1980s and 1990s. Galán’s paintings
were heavily influenced by Surrealist, self-analyzing themes found in the works
of Frida Kahlo (Mexican, 1907–1954). He explores his own identity and
narcissism using symbolism, humor, and sarcasm.
Techniques:
His work is develop in paintings.

In his own words:
(Once when he was asked: "Are you in
love with yourself?") "Sure," he replied. "This is what I
paint, this love of me. Once, I took it so far as to make love to myself.
Before going to sleep, I had put one of my pictures between my bed and the wall
close to my bed. Suddenly I woke up, and the emotion was so strong that I
grabbed the painting, put it on top of me and made love with it."
