BIO & STEPS
Born:
In 1968 in London, (UK)
Nowadays:
Lives and Works in London
Studies:
Ishbel
Myerscough studied at Glasgow school of Art from 1987-91. After graduating she
painted in a studio in Glasgow for two years, before going on to the Slade
School of Art to do a postgraduate in 1993. At the end of her studies Ishbel
was awarded a travel scholarship to New York. On returning to England she had
her second exhibition with Anthony Mould, then travelled back to the USA,
invited by Robert and Susan Summers to paint in their studios on their artists
programme in Connecticut. Finally Ishbel settled in London and has lived and
worked here since. She won the National Portrait Gallery BP Portrait Award in
1995, and has since completed two portrait commissions for their collection.
Themes and
style:
Ishbel
Myerscough is interested in pimples, not only pimples also wrinkles, puckers,
tattoos, moles, freckles, bulges, veins, hair, skin colour, stretchmarks - all
the things, in fact, that we edit out of our body images. Her work, very often,
constitutes a sort of journey to the surface of the human being and everything
she finds there she records.
Techniques:
Her work is developed in paintings.

In her own words:
The style that I use people think is quite
realistic and it is realistic but I think I suppose I see it as more naive.
Because if you use such sharp lines I think you’ll end up with a naiver image,
because realism tends to be slightly fuzzier, not quite so sharp around the
edges. And by putting in a very strong line and if you get that millimetre out,
it’s wrong and I like the wrongness in it rather than making it... If it’s
softer it can look more correct and so I think it ends up looking more naive
than precise and realist.
