BIO & STEPS

Born:
                  In 1967, Dresen, Germany

Studies:
In 1985 he completed an internship as a stonemason. He studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden from 1991–1996, where he became a master student under Professor Ralf Kerbach in 1997. In 1999 he was awarded the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff grant.

Nowadays:
Lives and works in Dresen and Berlin, Germany
Themes and style:
Eberhard Havekost often paints the city’s modernist-style buildings as a means to reference 20th century post-war politics and failed utopian vision. Havekost explores the parallels between these systemic ideas of perfection and the modes of ideal image construction. Working from his own collection of photos and video footage, Havekost alters the original images on a computer: hues are subtly altered, forms imperceptibly stretched and skewed. These complications are then further translated through the process of painting. What Havekost presents isn’t photographic precision, but rather transient moments of abstracted perception; the intentional ‘errors’ make the image appear more natural and visually pleasing.

Using the devices of photographic representation, Eberhard Havekost exposes the complex processes by which images are interpreted and inter-related. Through painting, Havekost transforms this plebeian view to create a disquieting experience from the overtly familiar. Editing the image down to its most functional elements, Havekost’s painting becomes almost pure abstraction: the windscreen is a field of fluctuating depth, framed by compositional blocks of colour. By selectively emphasising and omitting an image’s qualities, Havekost’s paintings operate like memory. Their associative form becomes subliminally dismantled for intimate contemplation and rumination.

In his own words:
“I think that every kind of symbol hinders direct access to reality. That’s why my version of the star is a constructed formal element. But even though I’ve changed the original size of the star and removed its characteristic red color, the reduced version still attracts attention. The Stern image is one of the few fragments of the painting that a viewer can decode. Other than that, it would be difficult to find other recognizable imagery in the exhibition, because in contrast with my earlier paintings, I’ve eradicated every form of memory fragment this time. There is no communication of understandable information; the viewer has to revert to his or her own personal interpretation.
My process is less and less directed towards a goal; instead, I reflect on the perception process. I’m interested in questions of how pictorial effects are created today, in which standard forms exist. Unfortunately, I notice more and more frequently that the results are often unbelievably boring in visual terms, whether we’re looking at the way symbols are used, or at poster design.”
