BIO & STEPS
Born:
- Markus Muntean; born 1962 in Graz, Austria
- Adi Rosenblum; born 1962 in Haifa, Israel
Nowadays:
They are artists based in Vienna and London.
They have been collaborating since 1992.
Themes and style:
Placing
themselves in Renaissance tradition, Muntean & Rosenblum make cartoons of
their major works. Shunning silver-point and charcoal for pencil and acrylic,
Muntean & Rosenblum’s end results show the subtle changes of character and
the rationalising of composition, the first drafts of a masterpiece. In Muntean
& Rosenblum’s finished works, the texts are presented as self-authored
philosophy. Here, the skeleton of their composition is shown: worthy phrases
and lines stolen from novels and magazine articles at random are pasted
together like a poetic ransom note.
Techniques:
They work in a variety of media, but
their most characteristic work involves painted formal compositions, with comic
book style captions, of teenage models from fashion magazines.

In his own words:
(Once when he was asked: "Are you in
love with yourself?") "Sure," he replied. "This is what I
paint, this love of me. Once, I took it so far as to make love to myself.
Before going to sleep, I had put one of my pictures between my bed and the wall
close to my bed. Suddenly I woke up, and the emotion was so strong that I
grabbed the painting, put it on top of me and made love with it."
