BIO & STEPS
Born:
In 1946 in Cambridge, Massachusetts
Nowadays:
Lives and works in Poughkeepsie, New York
Studies:
Murphy studied at Skowhegan School of Painting
and Sculpture in Maine and received a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in
1967. Her work is represented in public collections including the Whitney
Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of
Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Phillips Collection. In 2002 she was
inducted as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She was a
Senior Critic at Yale University Graduate School of Art for 22 years and is
currently the Tepper Family Endowed Chair in Visual Arts at the Mason Gross
School of the Arts at Rutgers.
Themes and
style:
She’s
considered a figurative painter. Her ideas often come from memories or dreams.
One night she dreamt of constellations; soon after she began a painting of a
polka-dotted dress. She is working on a drawing of a framed woodland scene
hanging on a wall; the inspiration for a picture within a picture was a
commercial in which various images appear on an iPod screen.
Techniques:
Her work is mostly developed in
graphite drawings and oil paintings.

In her own words:
“Art is made from a conversation that you are having with
art. That’s how the history of art is fueled. Most artists are contrarians. We
don’t sit in the world comfortably, we sit in the world with questions.”
